The writing sample below is one of my report card narratives from when I taught second grade. Grace is loving life as a second grader! Her spunky personality keeps us on our toes. She enters the classroom each morning with a story or Star Wars fact for her teachers and friends. We love hearing her unique explanations about how the world works, and appreciate how she often raises her hand to add to class discussions. Grace has become more resilient as the year progresses both academically and socially. A little girl very in touch with her emotions, she is learning to manage her sensitivity when her feelings are hurt. She wants to please her teachers and takes her friendships seriously. We are so proud of how Grace is progressing as a second grader! An avid reader from the beginning of the year, Grace loves to pick up a book. She loves having DEAR time, when she can read Junie B. Jones independently. When she is feeling confident, her reading voice shines. Often, however, she whispers when reading aloud. We encourage her to project her voice and enunciate her words. We know she can do it! Grace’s comprehension skills are developing. She does a nice job echoing the question when completing a written response, and benefits from the group discussion to compose a thorough answer. In writing we have been using a variety of organizational tools to help craft clear and detailed paragraphs. Grace’s adorable personality always shines through her words, which makes her writing fun and entertaining to read. She has a knack for incorporating interesting vocabulary into her stories to make them exciting. We compliment Grace’s consistent application of correct capitalization and punctuation. In her recent Favorite Place writing assignment, we loved reading all about Vermont, including her purple sled named Rosie. Never lacking creativity or imagination, Grace’s writing always makes us smile. Grace has worked hard in math this year. She has a solid understanding of the concepts covered so far. She loves the math games we play and our white board activities. We compliment the steady pace in which she works on her math assignments. Her foundation in math has prepared her to tackle new challenges in the spring trimester. All in all, second grade has been a wonderful year for Grace so far. We are endlessly proud of her accomplishments and look forward to her continued success in the spring trimester!
